I took the Beatles class last semester and yes, it was grueling but what a great experience. If it's offered again, I'd highly recommend it. Prof Cheney is the best.

This is the joy of liberal studies because we're able to learn about such things as monsters and zombies by analyzing and utilizing our critical thinking skills. But I'll tell ya, I would much rather let those monsters and zombies remain in my dreams rather than become a part of my reality. :-)

Great idea and I think Prezi is a really a nice break from the ho hum Power Point, as you said.

However, is this a tool for those already enrolled in the LIS degree plan or do you intend to use it as an outreach presentation? I see this as a really important question regarding the design because the terminology and acronyms will have to be chosen with greater care and organization if being used for outreach. Also, due to Prezi's non-linear format, I would suggest keeping the presentation very concise, and assure transitional clauses in the text to aid the reader (the ellipsis is very good) where appropriate. Maybe some beginning intro such as "click here to start" might help get people started too. Also, I would suggest another color scheme?

The Blackboard Mobile App only works for Blackboard 9, which runs on our test server. ITS turned it on for the test server today.

I was actually going to send you an email later on today, and ask you to test it! The address for the server is http://bbtest.uis.edu.

If you can't get it to work, let me know and I will see what might need to be done.

Emily, I saw that too - makes me wish I played Scrabble. The iPhone app store has a free app called Scrabble Rack.

It's also worth noting that I have the Blackboard iPad app but it does nothing but tell me to ask my BB administrator to turn on the functionality:)

I read that the Scrabble app will let you privately construct your words on the iTouch or iPhone, and then flick them to the game board on the iPad. Perhaps this functionality will come to other apps soon. I agree that integration is where the power of these devices will be.

I like the Beatles as well however, did not know Michael Cheney but I still thought it would be a great class. You are so right! It IS a LOT of work but very fascinating. So, wow - Jim Grubbs helped with LIS301? Makes sense now. I took his COM458 class last semester. Great class, great teacher. I highly recommend it.

Yes, you're right that the student experience becomes a mere blur when you're on the opposite side of it. Each semester, I've experienced feelings of not being able to wait until the cessation of that particular semester just to have that yearning for school to be back in session.

While I'm no longer a current student, I can definitely say that it's so much easier being on the outside looking in, but I won't lie and say that it's better. I really miss the student experience and would never frown on a little hard work. :-)

I'm not horn tooting, just noting my thoughts. I have to be pretty sick that I don't continue to answer emails from home. That's not to say I'm super-duper just that there is a dynamic with online students that I want to maintain as much as possible so unless I'm feverish, it doesn't hurt to spend a few minutes keeping up to the moment on email. I'm not always good at doing this but it's better to send, "sorry, I'm sick today so I'll get back to you soon" than it is not to respond at all. Hopefully, students will receive my autoreply so they'll know I'll be a day late.

Hopefully, furloughs will not be noticed. My goal is to take them when I think I won't be busy but other people don't plan their emergencies around my schedule:)

I agree with you, Dan. While it may sting a bit when an immediate answer is needed, it is much the same as if a staff or faculty member has taken a sick day or for some other reason, a particular department is short-staffed.

I think furlough days can negatively affect each person (the student as well as the staff member) depending upon the dilemma faced, but there is a bright side, which is that the staff member gets to take a day to relax and recoop.

I would think for anyone dedicated to his/her job, as you are, furloughs would be in one way kind of exasperating, when you are actually prohibited from engaging with people who depend on you for advice. But for the most part the online student is accustomed to the asynchronous nature of cyber learning, so not getting an answer for a day or so through e-mail or Blackboard is to be expected anyway. From what I've seen, the only really critical crunch-time is around the beginning of semester course registration when you might need quick answers to decide whether to keep or drop courses, etc. Otherwise, if a UI person was out sick with the flu or a family emergency or something, nobody would expect that person to answer immediately, so I think the best way to approach the furlough days is for everybody to regard them as if the UI faculty member or academic professional is taking a sick day off.

I'm really liking this idea because students should have the option of 1)knowing how much their textbooks cost ahead of time so that they could form a doable budget and 2)to have the ability to shop around for the best prices and even rent their textbooks if need-be. I think school bookstores really need to keep students' best interests in mind when selling educational materials because afterall, the students (or their parents/guardians) are paying to be there and have the right to pay a fair amount for their materials as well as to get them in a timely manner.

It looked interesting till it hit the Hot Pockets/Tombstone ingredients, then it lost me.

Plus it doesn't hit my personal "bad for you" at home goal of being cooked in a FryDaddy. (A few of the other "meals" (& I use that term very loosely) definitely had the potential.)
